Zaragoza’s Rastro to Open for Four Saturdays: When and Where the Stalls Will Be

Zaragoza’s Rastro will also open on Saturdays, at least temporarily. Zaragoza City Council is launching a pilot program to win back customers and boost sales, which have struggled to take off. For four weeks, the street market will add a third day of stalls at the Expo South Parking Lot to assess whether weekend trading works and whether the expansion could become permanent.

Zaragoza City Council, responding to a request from the Street Markets Board, has authorized the stalls to be set up on October 24 and 31 and November 7 and 14. These four days will be used to gauge the response from customers and assess whether it is worth making Saturdays a regular fixture, replacing some of the current days or introducing changes to how the market operates.

THREE MARKET DAYS

“For four weeks, we will have three market days. We will see what impact this proposal has on sales and attendance before making decisions for the future,” Mayor Natalia Chueca said on Sunday. The Rastro, which will therefore continue to operate on Wednesdays, Sundays and designated public holidays, remains a regular meeting point for people looking for clothing, accessories, household goods and other products at affordable prices.

Zaragoza’s Rastro currently has capacity for 453 stalls. The Street Markets Board has been calling for changes to the market’s format for some time. On Sundays, the Expo South Parking Lot fills with residents and curious visitors looking for the best bargains; however, sales volumes on Wednesdays drop sharply.

“It did not seem logical to us that a city like Zaragoza should have only two market days a week. Fortunately, the proposal has been heard,” said Diego Clavería, a member of the Street Markets Board. The proposal has been very well received by vendors.
