The expansion will be temporary for now. Zaragoza City Council has authorized the stalls to be set up on October 24 and 31 and November 7 and 14. The Street Markets Board will use these four market days to gauge the response from customers and assess whether Saturdays should become a regular fixture, replace one of the current days or lead to changes in how the market operates.
El Rastro currently operates on Wednesdays, Sundays and designated public holidays and remains a regular meeting point for people looking for clothing, accessories, household items and other affordable products. The Saturday trial will show whether the weekend can give the market fresh momentum and provide data to help determine its future. Mayor Natalia Chueca is expected to announce details of the initiative at El Rastro itself this Sunday.
