The project, designed by architect Eduardo Martín Correas, aims to create more pedestrian space, improve accessibility and reduce the barriers that currently hinder movement through this iconic site. To achieve this, the area occupied by water will be reduced and some level changes will be removed, without altering the main sculptural elements or the stone finishes. The intervention will also improve visitor circulation and make it easier to install stages and other structures during major events, such as the Fiestas del Pilar.
NEW OPPORTUNITY
The City Council hopes that this second procedure will allow the works to be awarded without modifying the initial project. If the tender is unsuccessful again, the municipal government is considering redrafting it in an effort to attract companies. Despite this setback, the city’s forecasts maintain the planned schedule, with work due to begin once the upcoming festivities have ended and be completed before March 2027.
The renovation of the Goya Fountain will be the first of the projects planned as part of the major transformation of Pilar Square, which also includes renovating the Hispanidad Fountain, adding vegetation and making other improvements to the public space.
