Zaragoza Bullring Roof to Be Unusable During Pilar Festival

The mobile roof of La Misericordia Bullring will not be usable during the upcoming Pilar Festival after being removed due to its condition. Maricarmen Lázaro, spokesperson for the Popular Party group in the Zaragoza Provincial Council, has demanded explanations from the institution's president, Juan Antonio Sánchez Quero.

Lázaro has called on the governing team to clarify when it became aware of the roof's problems, what inspections and maintenance work have been carried out in recent years, which technical reports recommended its removal and what timetable the Provincial Council has for restoring it.

“How is it possible that the roof of La Misericordia reached a condition that required its removal just before Zaragoza's main bullfighting event? Sánchez Quero must explain what the Provincial Council knew, when it knew it and why it failed to act in time,” the Popular Party spokesperson said.

PP DEMANDS EXPLANATIONS ABOUT MAINTENANCE

The PP agrees that the roof is one of the features that set La Misericordia apart and allows events to be held with greater protection from rain, wind and other adverse weather conditions. Its absence leaves the Pilar Festival without a feature that has distinguished Zaragoza's bullring for decades and increases the risk that weather could affect one of the shows.

The spokesperson warned that what happened is even harder to justify because the Provincial Council itself publicly defended this year that it allocates more than 300,000 euros annually to maintaining the bullring. The institution also announced the drafting of a master plan, with an estimated investment of around 10 million euros, to address the roof, accessibility and stands.

For the Popular Party group, the roof problem should not be presented as an isolated incident or as an inevitable consequence of the passage of time. Preserving a historic building requires regular inspections, forward planning and investment scheduling that makes it possible to act before deterioration prevents its facilities from being used.

“The Provincial Council owns La Misericordia and has an obligation to preserve it. It cannot always arrive late and react when the problem is already affecting the bullring's activities. A bullring of this importance needs planning, maintenance and management worthy of what it represents for Zaragoza,” Lázaro said.
