“We Want Festivals Without Animal Abuse”: Around 50 People Protest Wild Boar’s Death in Zaragoza

Dozens of people protested on Saturday over the death of the wild boar that roamed central Zaragoza last weekend during the Pilar Festival. Chanting “we want festivals without animal abuse” and “no to hunting, yes to protection,” the animal rights demonstration set off from Plaza España and headed to El Jardín del Temple bar in the Old Town, where the animal was killed.

Amnistía Animal, the association that organized the protest, criticized the authorities’ handling of the incident and called for a protocol to manage wildlife. Its president, Carla Allueva, explained that the animal was not violent or aggressive, as “people are trying to portray it,” but frightened, which was why it entered the pub.

She also said that numerous videos showed the wild boar in several areas and that it was ultimately “killed with a knife.” She therefore argued that something went wrong because, according to her account, “the firefighters had been alerted but did not have time to arrive.”

Allueva said that her association had offered to help the City Council rescue animals, as in this case: “We would have gone there, taken it out of the premises and put it in a cage, and released it into the woods.” She therefore called for a protocol so that this story “could have been a much more amusing anecdote.”

Meanwhile, the president of Amnistía Animal said that animal abuse had been normalized and whitewashed during this year’s Pilar Festival “as it was years ago”: “There were bullfights in the morning, at midday and at night.”
