The Water Park Fills with Cherry Trees: Zaragoza Plants a Land Art-Inspired Forest in Ranillas

Nearly 20 years after Expo 2008, Luis Buñuel Water Park continues to reinvent itself. Zaragoza City Council is preparing a series of renaturalization projects at the site to ensure it does not remain stuck in the memory of the International Exposition, but instead grows and adapts to today’s environmental challenges.

The most eye-catching project is Bosque Z, a tree-planting scheme in a strategic area of the Ranillas meander that will be designed according to Land Art principles, with the landscape itself serving as a work of art. The main species will be the flowering cherry tree (Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’), known for its abundant blooms, accompanied by other species. The work, which includes preparing the land, digging planting holes and planting the trees, has a budget of 46,513.61 euros, including VAT, and must be completed before December 31, 2026. According to the City Council, the aim is to transform degraded, gray spaces into living places that encourage people to reconnect with nature.

FLOWERING MEADOWS AND RESTORATION OF THE FORMER EQUESTRIAN GROUNDS

Bosque Z will not be the only project. Flowering meadows will also be restored in the same area, with a budget of 48,393.24 euros, through soil preparation and the sowing of adapted species, benefiting pollinators and biodiversity. The restoration of the former equestrian grounds is also included. Once their concession has ended, they will become part of the city’s green infrastructure. A new irrigation network will be installed there to support future plantings and create new natural and recreational spaces.

The package is rounded out by the renovation of the park’s drinking fountains, which will incorporate new sanitation, drainage and water-supply systems to improve accessibility and efficiency and make maintenance easier.
