Valdefierro asks Aragon Government to include residents in future Buen Pastor complex for older people

Valdefierro wants the future residential complex for older people at the former Buen Pastor site not to become an island within the neighborhood. The Buen Pastor Platform and the Valdefierro Residents’ Association will attend the Aragon Parliament this Wednesday, September 30, to ask the regional government to involve residents in the project’s development and maintain an ongoing dialogue during its implementation. Their request is based on a clear idea: that ties with the surrounding area should be part of the complex’s design itself rather than treated as a secondary issue.

The project proposes a residential model designed to allow older people to maintain their independence while preserving an active social life. For those requiring more care, a 100-place residence is planned, divided into small housing modules, while people with mild or moderate dependency will have access to supported apartments. The complex will also include a day center with capacity for 50 users.

According to the neighborhood organizations, the plan is inspired by models in Nordic countries and is based on person-centered care that takes into account not only residents’ physical needs, but also their emotional dimension, identity and abilities.

The other part of the project looks directly toward Valdefierro. The outdoor spaces are designed to encourage interaction between residents and neighbors and to be used by families, young people and children as well. The complex will also include multipurpose rooms that, although primarily intended for center users, could host activities open to the neighborhood. The aim is for those living there not to be cut off from everyday life in their surroundings, but to continue interacting with other generations and participating in community life.

HISTORIC DEMAND FROM RESIDENTS

The neighborhood organizations believe this openness should also be maintained throughout the project’s development. They are calling for access to updates, the ability to submit proposals and participation in finding ways to ensure coexistence between the new facility and the rest of Valdefierro. “We want residents to be part of the project and to help make Buen Pastor a space integrated into life in Valdefierro,” the Buen Pastor Platform and the Residents’ Association said.

The neighborhood movement also points out that the initiative is the result of a demand that began years ago and has spanned several legislative terms. They are therefore calling for continuity in the process and for residents not to be left out of a project that originated precisely from a neighborhood demand to reclaim the former Buen Pastor site.
