Three companies to carry out work on Plaza del Pilar: Goya Fountain still awaiting bids

Plaza del Pilar in Zaragoza now has companies to undertake much of the transformation announced by Zaragoza City Council last May. Aqlara Infraestructuras, Agua y Jardín and Antique Restauración de Arte will share the work to renovate one of the Aragonese capital’s best-known fountains, add vegetation and improve several ornamental and lighting elements. The three contracts total 1,047,280.20 euros, although the renovation of the Goya Fountain, aimed at freeing up pedestrian space and facilitating major events, is still awaiting a new tender.

The most visible change will come to the Patagonia basin of the Fuente de la Hispanidad, which Aqlara Infraestructuras will renovate for 443,483.74 euros. The project involves transforming the existing water feature into a walk-through fountain, with dynamic jets and lighting effects integrated into the ground, while retaining the outline of the map of South America. The work is intended to remove architectural barriers and turn the space into a more accessible and refreshing area during the warmer months.

Agua y Jardín, meanwhile, will be responsible for adding greenery to the pergolas and tree pits for 348,594.15 euros, with new plantings and green coverings providing shade and vegetation in an environment previously dominated by large granite surfaces.

The third contract, awarded to Antique Restauración de Arte for 255,202.31 euros, will allow work to be carried out on the lighting towers and the pergola of the bronze and steel gallery. Overall, the projects aim to renew the appearance of the square and improve its climate comfort and functionality without altering its status as a major monumental space and regular venue for mass celebrations.

GOYA FOUNTAIN WILL HAVE TO BE PUT OUT TO TENDER AGAIN

The main uncertainty remains at the end of the square where the Goya Fountain is located. The contract for its renovation received no bids, and a new period for submitting offers has been approved. The project envisages reducing the size of the water basins, lowering some architectural elements and reorganizing part of the sculptural ensemble to create more space for pedestrians and improve the fountain’s integration when it is switched off. It also includes modifying the water flow to adapt it to the square’s natural slope.
