Picarral Residents Challenge Tereos’ New Wastewater Plant in Zaragoza

The Picarral-Salvador Allende Neighbourhood Association has filed an administrative appeal against Tereos’ plan to build an industrial wastewater treatment plant on Binéfar Street in Zaragoza. The facility will reach 23 metres in height and stand less than 12 metres from some homes, prompting opposition from residents over its urban planning, environmental and public health impact. The initiative is also backed by the Ansar and RAPA organisations.

The appeal seeks to halt a project designed to treat effluents from Tereos, a company involved in the processing of starches and glucose whose factory is located next to the plot. The grounds for opposition include possible urban planning incompatibilities due to the infrastructure’s height, increased noise levels and the risk of fire, which residents say are reflected in the reports included in the case file. They also warn that a small green area near the site will disappear.

For its part, Zaragoza City Council supports the facility and says that Ecociudad’s reports endorse its implementation. According to the municipal authority, the treatment plant will substantially improve the parameters related to waste treatment, and Tereos has the necessary favourable documentation to continue operating.
