More traffic changes in Zaragoza’s Romareda: streets changing direction and new “Kiss & Go” zones

Zaragoza City Council will modify the European Elaborator pilot project from this Wednesday, October 21, after several weeks of analysis to improve road safety around schools in Romareda. The council and the Circe Foundation will adjust some initial measures and restore part of the previous layout on several streets, while maintaining specific measures to protect school access.

Key changes include restoring one-way traffic on Condes de Aragón and Luis Bermejo, as well as the parking spaces affected on Condes de Aragón. On Pedro III el Grande, between Condes de Aragón and Asín y Palacios, restricted traffic will remain in place from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with access for city and school buses, taxis and vehicles needing to reach the speed bumps. Outside those hours, general traffic will be allowed and the U-shaped area will once again be used for parking.

The reorganization also includes new Kiss & Go spaces, where families can drop off or pick up schoolchildren for a few minutes. They will be located around Doctor Azúa, Cesáreo Alierta, Augusto and Margarita Salas schools, with an arrangement adapted to each school’s needs. The aim is to combine pedestrian safety with traffic, parking and public and school transport mobility.

URBAN BUS ROUTES 35, 42 AND 53 RETURN

The review will allow the city bus stop at the intersection of Pedro III el Grande and Asín y Palacios, identified as number 623, to reopen for routes 35, 42 and 53. As a result, the provisional relocation of these routes to Condes de Aragón will end. School buses will also once again be able to access Pedro III, with the option of using the U-shaped area serving Doctor Azúa and Cesáreo Alierta schools.

Municipal technicians have also deemed it advisable to reverse the changes introduced on Pedro IV el Ceremonioso, next to Romareda School, and restore its previous layout. On Félix Navarro Pérez, the analysis points to the need to improve pedestrian routes and traffic management, with a proposal to add a new pedestrian crossing on Condes de Aragón. On Asín y Palacios, meanwhile, it was found that the difference between the speed limits on sections near the crossing between Margarita Salas School and the sports pavilion could encourage inappropriate speeds when approaching the junction.

The pilot project will end next October 30, when Zaragoza City Council will decide which measures to retain, modify or permanently discard. The project has €80,000 in funding from the European Horizon Europe program and is part of an initiative involving 12 cities and 38 partners.
