The magic of generational succession: Zaragoza art store avoids closure after 40 years

Many businesses have been unable to find a new generation to take over in recent years and have ultimately closed for good, with their premises later becoming something completely different. That was set to happen to Expresion’s Bellas Artes, which was about to say goodbye after four decades selling art and craft supplies.
The magic of generational succession: Zaragoza art store avoids closure after 40 years

The store announced on its social media accounts that it was ending its working chapter due to retirement and launched a clearance sale with discounts of up to 40%. “After 40 years, we are bringing our working chapter to an end,” the business told its customers a few weeks ago, while also announcing special discounts until stocks ran out.

The store window already reflects this final stage of the business.

But that will ultimately not be the case. A week ago, the store announced on its social media accounts: "Expresion’s is not closing; it will continue with the same service, the same products and the same prices. We will soon continue creating by your side," making it clear that permanently closing its doors was not an option.

THE YOUNG WOMAN FROM ZARAGOZA WHO IS MAKING A DREAM COME TRUE

The succession comes in the hands of a young artist from Zaragoza who, driven by her passion for art, has decided to embark on the adventure of taking charge of an iconic business in the city that could not be allowed to disappear. It is particularly positive news at a difficult time for long-established businesses, many of which are being forced to close their doors due to the lack of a new generation to take over.

Expresion’s Bellas Artes announced the transfer of the business in May 2025. More than a year later, the succession has become a reality thanks to the initiative of a young woman who has decided to support local commerce and keep alive the essence of a unique establishment in Zaragoza. A new chapter that demonstrates the importance of younger generations in ensuring the continuity of the long-standing businesses that form part of the city’s history and commercial identity.

SAME PRICES, SAME PRODUCTS AND SAME SERVICE

Because of the retirement, the store launched a clearance campaign that will remain active until stocks run out. The materials included range from watercolors, oils, brushes, pastels, colored pencils and acrylic sprays to other products related to fine arts.

The store window already reflects this final stage of the business, with signs announcing the “retirement clearance sale” while the available materials continue to be sold.

The closure marks the end of a story that began in 1986. Over these 40 years, Expresion’s Bellas Artes has specialized in products for artists, students and enthusiasts of drawing, painting and crafts.
