Historic Independencia Building to Become Apartments with a Gym and Coworking Space

The historic building at 37 Paseo Independencia in Zaragoza is entering a new phase with a project that will turn it into a complex of 86 flexible-rental apartments. Grupo Lobe is expected to receive the City Council’s urban planning and environmental license this Thursday to begin renovating the property, built in 1903. It will return to use as accommodation for people who need to live in the city for weeks or months. The opening is scheduled for the second half of 2028.

The transformation will involve a further investment of 10 million euros, in addition to the nearly 20 million the Zaragoza-based developer paid for the building in 2024. The work will renovate its interior spaces to adapt them to the flex-living model, a formula halfway between residential rentals and hotel services. The apartments will be aimed particularly at professionals on temporary assignments, executives taking part in short-term projects and people who need a medium-term stay in Zaragoza.

WHAT THE APARTMENTS WILL BE LIKE

The complex will feature units that are more spacious than a conventional hotel room. The project includes studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments, as well as communal areas designed to make residents’ stays and work easier. Planned facilities include coworking areas, terraces and a gym, combining the privacy of a home with shared services.

The development also includes a bar on the upper floors of the building and private parking, two features that will complete the property’s offering. Located in the heart of Zaragoza, next to Telefónica’s former headquarters, the building is one of the historic properties on Paseo Independencia. The renovation will restore the space for a new use while retaining its prime location on one of the main commercial and urban arteries of the Aragonese capital.
