Have Work Begun on Plaza del Pilar? No, Here’s What’s Being Set Up at the Hispanidad Fountain

The arrival of machinery and large concrete blocks at Plaza del Pilar has sparked curiosity among people walking through Zaragoza’s city center. Work is focused around the Hispanidad Fountain and the Patagonia basin, an area that will soon change in appearance. At first glance, it may seem that renovation work announced by Zaragoza City Council has begun, but nothing could be further from the truth: preparations are underway for the traditional Christmas ice rink.

The installation of the skating rink is one of the city’s Christmas traditions and requires preparatory work that is already becoming visible in this emblematic location. The concrete blocks and machinery are part of the preparations to ready the area for one of the attractions that brings together families with children every year, as well as young people and people of all ages.

The scene does coincide, however, with a time when Plaza del Pilar is awaiting a major transformation. In late October, Mayor Natalia Chueca announced that the first renovation work would begin in November, although interventions would be limited so as not to interfere with the Christmas program.

MOST OF THE RENOVATION WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER CHRISTMAS

The city’s project includes adding more vegetation, renovating the pergolas and carrying out work on the Goya and Hispanidad fountains. At the latter, the Patagonia basin will retain its distinctive South America map silhouette, but it will feature new dynamic jets and lighting effects integrated into the ground.

The most intensive work will be reserved for after Christmas, allowing the celebrations to go ahead as normal. In the meantime, the machinery that has appeared next to the Hispanidad Fountain has a much more festive mission: preparing the square to once again fill with skaters in the coming weeks.
