Goodbye to the high-voltage pylons beside María Zambrano as underground works begin

The high-voltage pylons beside CEIP María Zambrano in Parque Venecia are to be removed. Zaragoza City Council has begun work to bury the power lines crossing Parque del Barranco de la Muerte, a project long requested by residents and the school community. The work will eliminate the overhead structures alongside the school and remove their visual impact from the green space.

Work is focused on building underground conduits between Parque Venecia and the Tiro de la Bola path. The civil engineering project, awarded to Ingeniería y Técnicas Globales de Resolución Ambiental SL, has a budget of 422,165.37 euros and will prepare the infrastructure needed to move both the high- and medium-voltage networks underground.

The project is being carried out under an agreement between Zaragoza City Council and electricity company eDistribución, which will share responsibility for the different phases of the work. The city council is responsible for excavating the trenches and building the conduits, while the company will subsequently install the new underground cabling, connect it to the grid and permanently remove the pylons that are taken out of service.

MORE THAN TWO KILOMETRES OF LINES UNDERGROUND

The project includes the construction of 1.7 kilometres of new underground high-voltage network and a further 550 metres of medium-voltage lines. The route begins at one of the electricity supports next to CEIP María Zambrano, on avenida de la Policía Local, and continues to the area where the Cuarte path connects with the extension of calle Fray Julián Garcés.

The work requires engineering measures to adapt the existing facilities and replace the overhead lines with new underground infrastructure. On the 45-kilovolt high-voltage line, the new underground route will be built and the necessary connections made to take the current installation out of service.

On the 10-kilovolt medium-voltage network, a triple circuit will be installed, along with a new switching centre equipped with an auxiliary-services transformer. The pylons will be removed as the final step, once the new cabling has been installed and the underground network is operational.
