Giant Balls, Acrobats and Humor: What to Expect at the 2026 Fiestas del Pilar Proclamation Parade

Zaragoza's city center will become a vast open-air stadium this Saturday, October 10, welcoming the 2026 Fiestas del Pilar. This year's traditional Proclamation parade will put sport center stage, bringing together 500 participants, including Olympic and Paralympic athletes, clubs, federations and sports schools. All will perform under the slogan "Champion Zaragoza," a preview of the European Capital of Sport title the city will hold in 2027.

The parade will set off at 6:30 p.m. from the area around CEIP Joaquín Costa and travel along paseo María Agustín, Puerta del Carmen, avenida César Augusto, Coso and calle Alfonso I before reaching Plaza del Pilar. There, at 9:00 p.m., the official Proclamation will take place, led this year by Zaragoza City Council's Fire, Rescue and Civil Protection Service.

The procession will recreate the arrival of sports delegations at an Olympic stadium, although this time the city streets will serve as the stands and Plaza del Pilar will become the ceremony's main stage. Music, humor, circus acts, acrobatics and numerous surprises will accompany participants along the route, with performances designed to engage Zaragoza residents.

ZARAGOZA'S OLYMPIANS, PARALYMPIANS AND CLUBS TO STAR IN THE PARADE

The parade will begin with flag bearers carrying the banners of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain and Zaragoza European Capital of Sport 2027, followed by the flags of some of the city's most representative clubs. They will be followed by a dozen Olympic and Paralympic athletes linked to Zaragoza, including Fernando Arcega, Isabel Macías, Jorge Sánchez, José Ángel Arcega, María Delgado, María José Povés and Roberto García.

The spotlight will then turn to grassroots sport in Zaragoza, with broad representation from clubs, federations and schools showcasing the range of disciplines practiced in the city. Football will open this section with Real Zaragoza, Stadium Casablanca, CD Amistad, Wanapix FS, FS Cesaraugusta and Colo Colo, accompanied by giant balls, referees and stilt-walking characters recreating scenes from a match.

Basketball will be represented by the men's and women's Casademont Zaragoza teams and CB Zaragoza, with mobile hoops, cheerleaders and a host who will turn the streets into a traveling court. There will also be an unusual urban regatta featuring canoeing and rowing, humorous cyclists, tennis matches with giant balls and even a moving imaginary pool depicting different water sports.

Athletics, handball, skating, taekwondo, rhythmic gymnastics and volleyball will complete the sporting lineup. Each discipline will feature its own staging, from goalkeepers with giant arms to routines with ribbons and hoops, martial arts demonstrations and exercises on wheels.

MUSIC, CIRCUS AND HUMOR TO LIVEN UP THE STREETS

Beyond the athletes, the parade will feature numerous street theater, circus and entertainment companies bringing spectacle to central Zaragoza. Groups including The Poncho's, Coscorrón Banda de Animación, K de Calle, Binomio Teatro, Producciones Kinser and Nostraxladamus will take part, with performances designed to surprise and interact with the public.

The celebration will also recognize the work of the sports clubs and organizations that keep activity alive in the neighborhoods, from youth categories to elite competition. In this way, Zaragoza will begin its Fiestas del Pilar already looking toward 2027, when it will serve as European Capital of Sport, in a day that will culminate with the Zaragoza firefighters' Proclamation from Plaza del Pilar.
