El Pilar celebrations end with rain, strong winds and a sharp temperature drop in Aragon

The final day of the El Pilar festivities dawned in Zaragoza with completely overcast skies, strong gusts of wind and the first drops of rain from early morning. Weather conditions will not favor the closing celebrations, with rain, the cierzo wind and falling temperatures expected to dominate Sunday across much of Aragon, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Rainfall will be concentrated mainly in the southern half and eastern part of the region, where it may be light or moderate and persist for much of the day. It cannot be ruled out in the northwest either, although in this area it is expected to be more scattered, occasional and less intense. All of this will occur under skies that will remain very cloudy or overcast.

THE CIERZO WILL DEFINE THE FIRST HOURS OF SUNDAY

Wind will be another factor to take into account, especially in Zaragoza and the Ebro Valley, where moderate cierzo winds are expected. Aemet also warns of a low probability of very strong northwesterly gusts in Zaragoza province during the first hours of the day.

Conditions are expected to improve in this respect as Sunday progresses, as the cierzo will lose intensity before becoming light in the afternoon. In the rest of Aragon, winds will generally be light, from the north in the Iberian System and the high elevations of the Pyrenees, from the west in southern Huesca and variable in other areas.

HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL FALL SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE SOUTH AND EAST

The change in weather will be accompanied by a widespread drop in temperatures, which will be felt especially in southern and eastern Aragon. In these areas, maximum temperatures will fall significantly, according to the weather forecast.

Zaragoza will record the highest maximum of the three Aragonese capitals, with 18 degrees and a low of 10. In Huesca, temperatures will range between 11 and 15 degrees, while Teruel will have the coldest conditions during the day, with a high of 13 degrees and a low of 7, the lowest of the three capitals.

In addition, minimum temperatures will not be recorded during the early hours of the morning but at the end of the day, meaning conditions will become increasingly colder as the day progresses. Light frosts are also expected at high elevations in the Pyrenees.

SNOW LEVEL WILL FALL TO 1,800 METERS IN THE PYRENEES

The colder conditions will also be felt in mountain areas, where precipitation may fall as snow in the highest parts of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Aemet places the snow level between 1,800 and 2,000 meters, on a Sunday of distinctly autumnal conditions that will bring the El Pilar festivities to an end.
