Azuara revisits the scars of the Civil War with an international congress this weekend

The scars of the Civil War remain part of the landscape and memory of Azuara (Campo de Belchite, Zaragoza). Nearly nine decades after the bombings, evacuations and fighting that marked the town and its residents, the municipality will revisit this chapter of its history through research and archaeology this weekend.

Azuara will host the International Congress on the Spanish Civil War (CIGCE) this Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, bringing together experts to explore some of the events that took place in the town and its surrounding area. The event will come to Azuara after an initial day of presentations this Thursday at the University of Zaragoza.

It will therefore be a setting closely connected to the issues under discussion. Azuara played an important role as a rear-area and military operations zone during the conflict, particularly in 1937 and 1938. The town suffered bombing raids, some of its residents had to be evacuated, and many sought protection from air attacks in the caves on the other side of the Cámaras River. The surrounding area also preserves the remains of positions and fortifications built during the war.

That past will be very much present at a congress that will explore the archaeology of a battlefront, the Aragon Offensive, the presence of international combatants, Nazi propaganda and Civil War fortifications.
