Are Traditional Burials Making a Comeback? Burials Rise 40% in Zaragoza

Are traditional burials regaining ground against cremations in the Aragonese capital? The latest data released by Zaragoza City Council point to a possible shift in trend at Torrero Cemetery. Burials have increased by nearly 40% so far in 2026 compared with the same period last year, a significant rise after several years in which cremation had become the preferred option among Zaragoza families.

Despite this rebound, cremations are also continuing to trend upward and are still gaining followers, Mayor Natalia Chueca has confirmed. For now, the city council has not provided the absolute figures for either option in 2026, so it will be necessary to wait for the full data to determine whether this growth in traditional burials changes the trend of recent years.

For now, the latest available records are based on data from 2024. That year, according to data from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE), 9,673 people died in Zaragoza province. Of these, 3,674 chose to have their ashes placed at Torrero, compared with 2,149 burials of remains.

ALMOST 700,000 PEOPLE REST IN TORRERO CEMETERY

The Zaragoza cemetery, which opened its gates in 1834, marks 192 years of uninterrupted activity this year and has become the largest cemetery complex in Aragon. From the nearly 42,000 square meters it occupied at its origins, it has expanded to cover 519,015 square meters. Approximately 700,000 people rest on its grounds, and the current inventory lists 148,194 funeral units, nearly 78% of which are niches.

In addition to its size and funeral activity, Torrero has a 5.7-hectare natural area containing 4,621 trees, 529 shrubs, 28 fountains and 220 benches. The setting is also designed to provide a place for residents to rest and visit.
