24-hour trams and shuttles to the fairgrounds: Zaragoza boosts public transport for the Pilar Festival

The countdown to the Pilar Festival has begun, and Zaragoza is preparing to change much of its urban mobility. From this Friday, October 9, major festivities, the opening of the Valdespartera fairgrounds and the arrival of thousands of people in the city center will require stronger public transport services, along with closures and diversions in some areas of the city.

The special plan will include trams running 24 hours a day, bus shuttles to Valdespartera and additional services on numerous urban and night routes. There will also be traffic restrictions at locations such as the Puente de Piedra, Don Jaime and Independencia between October 9 and 18, coinciding with the central days of the festival.

TRAMS WILL RUN 24 HOURS A DAY

Zaragoza's tram system will run 24 hours a day from this Friday through Sunday, October 18, as part of the special mobility plan launched by Zaragoza City Council. During periods of peak demand, Line 1 will also run every four to five minutes.

Due to the large crowds expected at the Valdespartera fairgrounds and Espacio Zity during these days, the Un Americano en París and Mago de Oz stops will also have barriers, ticket validators, security personnel and a police presence to manage passengers.

Meanwhile, trams will continue running along the Paseo de Independencia despite the avenue being closed to general traffic, although there will be temporary interruptions during major events such as the Pregón, the Ofrendas and the Rosario de Cristal. At those times, and whenever the Local Police determines that it is necessary for safety reasons, the line may be split into two sections, temporarily leaving the central area of Independencia and Coso without service.

TWO SHUTTLES TO REACH VALDESPARTERA

As in previous years, the urban bus network will operate two special lines to facilitate travel to the Fairgrounds. The V1 will connect Puerta del Carmen with Valdespartera from October 9 to 25 and will operate with up to 23 buses on the busiest days. This year, part of its route will be changed due to construction work on Avenida de Valencia, and it will run along Calle Santander and Duquesa Villahermosa before returning to its usual route via Gómez Laguna.

The V4, meanwhile, will connect Valdespartera with Paseo de la Constitución between October 9 and 18 and will operate with up to eight vehicles. To speed up return journeys from the fairgrounds, the V1 terminal will also have a prepayment and validation booth on several early mornings.

MORE URBAN AND NIGHT BUS SERVICES

The urban network will also add services on numerous lines during the central days of the festival. On October 10, 11, 12 and 17, many urban buses will operate on weekday schedules, while service on nearly 20 lines will be extended during the nights from October 9 to 17.

There will also be additional services on the Búho night buses, which will double their service on the busiest nights, as well as on connections to rural districts. In the latter areas, night services will run every night during the festival, and some frequencies will be extended until approximately 3:00 a.m.

CLOSURES ON DON JAIME, PUENTE DE PIEDRA AND INDEPENDENCIA

From 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, until 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, the Puente de Piedra and Calle Don Jaime will be closed to traffic. Independencia will also prohibit general traffic and buses during those days, although pedestrians will still be allowed through, as will bicycles, personal mobility vehicles and trams, except during specific restrictions.

These closures will require changes to the routes of lines 32, 35, N1, N2 and N7, which will use alternative routes via Puente del Pilar, Alonso V, Asalto, Paseo de la Mina and Constitución.

THREE FREE CAR PARKS IN VALDESPARTERA

The Fairgrounds will remain open from October 9 to 25, while Espacio Zity will operate from October 9 to 17. For those choosing to travel by private vehicle, three temporary free car parks will be made available. Together with the existing facilities, they will provide around 1,550 spaces for cars and 60 for motorcycles.

Avenidas de Casablanca, Salomón and La Reina de Saba will operate as one-way streets during those days to manage access. There will also be a taxi rank at the main entrance to the site, while the Bizi bike-sharing service will be available 24 hours a day during the festival. However, Zaragoza City Council recommends reaching the area by bus or tram.
