A village in Teruel seeks new residents to keep its only bakery open: €100 a year and housing included

In small villages, some shops are much more than places to buy necessities. A store, bar or bakery can become an essential service for residents and help sustain everyday life throughout the year. This is the case in Frías de Albarracín, a small town in Teruel with 109 residents, where the local council is looking for someone to take over the municipal bakery. The opportunity to start a business in the Sierra de Albarracín also comes with municipal housing in the village.

The local council has opened the tender process to operate the business, located in a 130-square-metre municipal premises at 7 Calle Alta, with access from Calle Mayor. The facilities include a bread shop, oven, storage room, bathroom and boiler, as well as the equipment and machinery needed to carry out the activity. The minimum rent has been set at 100 euros a year plus VAT, although applicants may offer a higher amount in their bids.

This condition also comes with the possibility of accessing municipal housing for 150 euros, thus facilitating the move of the person or family taking over the business. In fact, the successful bidder will be required to establish their habitual residence and register as a resident in Frías de Albarracín. The bakery contract will initially last two years and may be extended in two-year periods up to a maximum of ten years. The business is expected to begin operating on February 1, 2027.

People interested in taking over the establishment have until October 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. to submit their bids. The requirements include having legal capacity to act, being up to date with tax and Social Security obligations, and holding a category B driving licence.

Applications may be submitted through the electronic office of Frías de Albarracín Town Council or in person at the council offices, located at 1 Plaza Mayor. In the latter case, the designated hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

LIVING IN A VILLAGE AN HOUR FROM TERUEL

Accepting the offer would also mean starting a new life in one of the small municipalities of the Sierra de Albarracín. Frías de Albarracín has 109 residents, according to 2025 data from Spain’s National Statistics Institute, and a municipal area of 50.79 square kilometres. It is located in the heart of the Montes Universales, surrounded by the mountainous landscape characteristic of this part of Teruel province.

The town is approximately an hour’s drive from Teruel. From the provincial capital, drivers must head towards Gea de Albarracín and Albarracín, then continue towards Royuela before turning towards Frías de Albarracín and passing through Calomarde. Its location makes it possible to live in a small rural community while remaining relatively close to Teruel and towns such as Albarracín.

Despite its small size, Frías de Albarracín preserves several sites of historical and natural interest. Its notable buildings include the Church of the Assumption and the Chapel of San Roque, while the Chapel of El Carmen can be found in Casas de Frías. The village also stands on the slope of Castle Hill, where various excavations have uncovered the remains of a settlement dating to around 1520 BC.

The natural surroundings are another of its main attractions. Nearby are places such as Fuente del Berro and Fuente del Buey, both with picnic areas, as well as Fuente de la Mora and Fuente Mentirosa. The area also offers views of Peña Rubia and the Hoz Canyon, while the Devil’s Cave is located close by. One of the most unusual natural features is the so-called “H tree”, formed by two pine trees naturally joined by a branch.

The bakery tender therefore offers an opportunity that goes beyond taking charge of a business. For anyone considering starting a venture and moving to the countryside, the offer makes it possible to settle in a small municipality in the Sierra de Albarracín, have access to municipal housing and run an establishment providing one of the services that is particularly important in towns with little more than 100 residents.
