Its opening complements the 16-metre pool already operating at the complex and will allow the uses of both facilities to be diversified: the new pool will be aimed particularly at training and competitions, while the smaller one will continue to host introductory courses and activities for which its depth is more suitable.
The new facility, also designed for competitions, has starting platforms, turning panels, lane markings and an electronic timing system. The stands can accommodate more than 100 spectators, and the facility will serve the Bajo Aragón Swimming Club and the Tragamillas Club’s triathlon section, as well as hosting municipal classes in aquatic conditioning and skills development.
THERAPEUTIC AND ACCESSIBLE USE
The new space includes measures to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility, such as a ramp, a fold-down seat in the shower area and a lift for entering the water. It also has six showers, changing rooms shared with the 16-metre pool and large windows that provide natural light through translucent panels that protect users’ privacy.
During the inauguration, Aragón’s vice president, Mar Vaquero, highlighted that the project, with a budget of just over three million euros, received a €600,000 contribution from the Teruel Investment Fund. She also stressed that the pool not only expands Alcañiz’s sporting opportunities, but will allow families, young people, older people and those requiring treatment to access the service without having to travel to other towns.
Alcañiz Mayor Miguel Ángel Estevan described the opening as the fulfilment of a commitment made to residents and said the city “deserved and needed a 21st-century pool.” Vaquero, for her part, put the Aragón Government’s investment in strategic projects for Alcañiz since 2023 at €71.8 million. This includes the new hospital, projects at MotorLand and Technopark, and various investments in education, sport and infrastructure.
