One of them is in Alcaine, a small municipality in the province of Teruel located in the heart of the Martín River Cultural Park. There, among ravines and spectacular natural surroundings, lies the Cubo Waterfall, a drop in the Radón River that has become one of the area’s most refreshing and striking spots.
But the waterfall is not the only reason to visit Alcaine. The municipality allows visitors to round off their getaway with canoeing routes, visits to examples of rock art declared a World Heritage Site, or a visit to the interpretation center dedicated to local wildlife. This combination of nature, heritage and outdoor activities makes this small town in Teruel a perfect destination for a day trip.

CUBO WATERFALL
One of Alcaine’s most spectacular natural spots is the Cubo Waterfall, a cascade on the Radón River surrounded by lush vegetation. The trail leading to it runs through pine forests and rock formations, making it an ideal scenic experience for those seeking to disconnect and enjoy nature in its purest form.
Visiting the waterfall is free and open to everyone all year round. There is no tourist infrastructure of any kind, so it is advisable to plan the route in advance and be prepared for the hottest days of summer.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN ALCAINE
In addition to being a perfect destination for a refreshing swim, Alcaine offers more places to cool off and discover sites of tourist interest.
Cueva Foradada Reservoir and water activities
Just a few minutes from Alcaine’s town center lies Cueva Foradada Reservoir, an ideal place to enjoy nature and water activities such as canoeing. The local company Natualcaine organizes canoe excursions on the reservoir, allowing participants to calmly explore its waters while admiring the imposing limestone cliffs and the surrounding wild landscape.
Canoeing route schedules and prices vary depending on the season, so booking in advance directly through the company’s website or by telephone is recommended. The activities are suitable for both adults and families with children, always following safety measures and accompanied by professional guides.
Martín River Cultural Park Wildlife Interpretation Center
Located in a former Renaissance manor house in Alcaine’s Plaza Tenor Albero, this center offers a comprehensive overview of the wildlife in the Martín River Cultural Park. Through reproductions, graphics and information panels, visitors can learn in detail about the area’s different ecosystems and the species that inhabit them, from birds of prey to mammals and reptiles native to this part of Teruel.
Admission to the center is free and, although it has no fixed opening hours for the public, contacting the center in advance to arrange a visit is recommended, especially during the low season.

La Higuera and Cañada de Marco Rock Art
Alcaine is part of the Martín River Cultural Park, a protected area featuring spectacular examples of Levantine rock art declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The La Higuera and Cañada de Marco rock shelters are located within the municipality, where prehistoric paintings depicting hunting scenes and human and animal figures thousands of years old can still be seen.
Access to these sites is free, although visitors must follow the PR-TE 114 hiking trail, which crosses uneven and somewhat demanding terrain. Some routes can also be completed with a guide by booking in advance through the cultural park.
Medieval Towers Route
Alcaine preserves the remains of eleven medieval towers that once formed part of its defensive system, built to protect the town in a strategic location. The towers route is a perfect experience for history and hiking enthusiasts, as it allows them to walk along the rocky ridges where these structures stand and enjoy impressive views of the valley’s natural surroundings.
Access to the route is completely free and open all year round. However, it is advisable to wear suitable footwear and bring water, as the trail includes steep sections and areas exposed to the sun.
