Zaragoza pharmacists offer advice on nutrition and skincare during cancer treatment

Nutrition, skincare and ways to cope with some treatment side effects are part of the daily lives of many people with cancer and their families. To provide practical answers to these needs, pharmacists from Zaragoza will take part this weekend in the 11th Congress for People with Cancer and Their Families in Aragón, to be held on November 6 and 7 at the Zaragoza Conference Centre.

The Official College of Pharmacists of Zaragoza (COFZ) is joining a gathering designed to allow patients and relatives to share experiences, resolve questions and learn about resources that can help improve their well-being throughout the cancer journey. Their participation is part of the agreement signed on October 27 by the college’s president, Raquel García Fuentes, and the president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Zaragoza, José María Arnal.

“The proximity and accessibility of pharmacists allow us to support people with cancer and their families throughout the entire process,” García Fuentes said, noting that the congress will also make it possible to “listen to their needs and share practical advice.” Arnal, from the Spanish Association Against Cancer, likewise stressed that “the role of pharmacies is fundamental in the cancer process.”

CARING FOR THE SKIN AND NUTRITION DURING TREATMENT

One of the main contributions from the pharmacists will take place on Saturday, November 7, from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m., with the workshop “Comprehensive care for oncology patients through community pharmacy, dermatology and nutrition.” The session will be led by Elva Orta Hoyos, COFZ board member responsible for Nutrition, and Miguel Montero Moreo, board member responsible for Dermopharmacy.

During the workshop, recommendations will be provided on identifying and addressing the side effects of cancer treatments that can affect the skin and nutrition. The specialists will combine dermopharmacy and nutrition advice with simple self-care guidelines that patients and relatives can incorporate into their daily lives. “The aim is to provide useful guidelines for caring for patients from the inside and out,” Montero explained.

The collaboration between both organizations also extends to skin cancer prevention. The College of Pharmacists and the Spanish Association Against Cancer jointly take part in initiatives such as “Sun Without Risk,” aimed at promoting sun protection at swimming pools, and “You Decide, #Noterayes,” focused on raising awareness of the risks associated with tanning beds.
