This Is What Zaragoza Medical College’s New Headquarters Will Look Like After Its Full Renovation

The project covers 1,631 square meters and will modernize the building, improve accessibility and create new spaces for training, meetings and activities also open to the public.

Work began in June 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The main improvements include the installation of a panoramic elevator connecting all levels, the reorganization of interior routes and the recovery of areas that had previously seen limited use.

GREATER ACCESSIBILITY AND NEW SPACES

The renovation will transform the former attic space into a new floor mainly intended for continuing education. In addition, a landscaped English courtyard will be created on level -1, providing natural light and ventilation while allowing this level to be restored for meetings, cultural activities and spaces for interaction among members.

The project also addresses the building’s previous limitations. According to COMZ president Javier García Tirado, people with reduced mobility could barely use the entrance level, while other spaces had restrictions on their use for safety reasons.

The project also includes the renovation of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, along with improvements designed to reduce energy consumption. The headquarters will feature solar panels on the roof, better window insulation and lighting systems adapted to the needs of each area.

A MORE EFFICIENT AND OPEN HEADQUARTERS

The renovation will preserve the building’s brutalist identity, having been designed in 1978 by José Manuel Sancho Garralaga. The project’s lead architect, Javier Hernando, explained that the aim is to preserve the property’s original qualities and adapt them to the College’s current needs without altering its essence.

The renovation will also make it possible to bring together at Ruiseñores services, training and activities that in recent years have had to take place in other venues. The goal is to strengthen the headquarters’ role as a meeting point for professionals and encourage participation among members.

In addition, COMZ wants the building to have a stronger connection with the city. Some of the new multipurpose spaces will be able to host educational and cultural activities, as well as events open to the public, with the aim of bringing the medical profession even closer to Zaragoza.
