Zaragoza hosts traditional saber presentation for Military Academy cadets

Zaragoza’s General Military Academy held one of its most traditional ceremonies on Thursday. Academy Director Prudencio Horche Moreno presided over the presentation of sabers to newly enrolled cadets training to join the officer ranks of the Spanish Army and Civil Guard.

The ceremony also marked one of the first important moments for students who have just joined the Academy. The internal event was the first in which newly enrolled students took part and symbolized their award of the title of gentleman or lady cadet.

THE SABER AS A SYMBOL OF COMMAND

Sabers are currently used only at solemn events and ceremonies. Their presentation therefore takes on value as a symbol of the command the cadets will exercise in a few years.

The ceremony also included the presentation of appointments as Second Lieutenants, Sergeants and Lance Corporals. AGM photos

With this presentation, the cadet assumes the role for which they must prepare and formalizes their commitment to embracing the values of patriotism, honor, loyalty and service, the foundation of their moral training and principles set out in the cadet’s decalogue.

As tradition dictates, second-year cadets also played a key role in the ceremony. As members of a more senior class, they are responsible for presenting the sabers that will distinguish their fellow cadets as future officers.

SPEECHES AND PRESENTATION OF APPOINTMENTS

During the ceremony, the number-one cadets from the LXXXV and LXXXVI classes each delivered a speech to their fellow students as the most representative members of both classes.

The ceremony also included the presentation of appointments as Second Lieutenants, Sergeants and Lance Corporals, a distinction awarded to students for their outstanding performance at the Academy.
