OUR LADY OF SORROWS
Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of Anguish, Our Lady of Bitterness or La Dolorosa, is one of the most significant titles of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic tradition. Devotion to her focuses particularly on the suffering she experienced as a mother during the Passion and death of Jesus.
The figure of Our Lady of Sorrows represents devotion, compassion and maternal love even in moments of the greatest suffering. Her image has gained an important place in Christian tradition and is venerated by numerous faithful in different parts of the world.
This title is also the patroness of Slovakia and is especially revered in different countries in Latin America and in Portugal. Every September 15, the faithful remember Mary as a symbol of strength and support in the face of pain and hardship.
WHY ARE SAINTS’ FEAST DAYS CELEBRATED?
The celebration of a saint’s feast day allows Christians to commemorate the exemplary lives of those who came before them in the faith. This tradition dedicates different days of the calendar to remembering saints and important figures in Christianity, whose names and feast days are recorded in the Roman Martyrology.
The Roman Martyrology brings together the names of the saints and is updated with new additions following the corresponding canonizations. Although the celebration of name days now has less social significance than in the past, it remains a deeply rooted tradition among many faithful.
