Vermouth gathering to restore Zalfonada school kitchen as families continue protests

The grounds of Zalfonada Public School became a space for protest this Saturday. More than 150 members of the school community gathered for a popular vermouth event to demand the return of the school’s on-site kitchen, which currently operates under a cook-chill system. Families have been making the demand to the education authorities for years, but it remains unresolved.

The event, organized by the Association of Students’ Mothers and Fathers (AMPA), began at 12:00 p.m. with a photograph of those attending. The association’s president then recalled the years of campaigning to restore a kitchen that, the families claim, already existed at the school before being dismantled by the education authorities. Their aim is for food to once again be cooked on the school’s own premises.

The protest was supported by the Platform for Public Food, represented by Genaro Delgado, and the Zalfonada-Picarral Neighborhood Platform. However, the AMPA regretted that no representative of the Government of Aragon or the opposition parties attended the gathering, despite having been invited.

FAMILIES WANT TO RESTORE THE KITCHEN NEXT SUMMER

The school community insists that restoring the school’s own kitchen is a longstanding demand. As they explained a few days ago, they consider it unjustified that Zalfonada continues to use the cook-chill system when, they maintain, other schools in the surrounding area have their own kitchens.

Far from calling off their protests, the families say they will continue their campaign over the coming months. The AMPA, which has more than eleven mothers actively involved in its work, hopes they can meet again next summer, this time to celebrate that the school cafeteria has been renovated and equipped to cook on the school premises.

The day ended with a vermouth gathering held inside the school cafeteria. The association thanked the organizations and hospitality businesses that contributed to the initiative, including the TOPI School of Hospitality in Picarral.
