University of Zaragoza rejects turning campuses into "electoral mobilization venues"

The University of Zaragoza says it is necessary to preserve the institutional neutrality of its campuses as elections approach. The university said Monday that its facilities “must remain at the service of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and coexistence across the entire university community.”

For this reason, the university said it must ensure that its spaces and resources “are not used in a way that could be interpreted as explicit or implicit support for political parties, candidates or partisan initiatives.” It therefore stressed that the University of Zaragoza’s campuses “must not become venues for mobilization or instruments for promoting electoral messages.”

The institution will act in accordance with applicable regulations and its own provisions on the use of university spaces, taking into account the nature of each activity. “The University of Zaragoza must be a space for knowledge and plural debate, open to all ideas, but free from any partisan instrumentalization of its facilities or institutional identity,” it concluded.
