“They must be removed as soon as possible”: calls to take rubber flooring out of playgrounds

The rubber flooring found in many playgrounds, schoolyards and sports fields is under scrutiny from Ecologists in Action. The organization called for its immediate removal on Wednesday over the potential health and environmental risks posed by these materials, particularly to children, adolescents and pregnant women.
“They must be removed as soon as possible”: calls to take rubber flooring out of playgrounds

The call comes from Parques con Salud, a new citizen science campaign warning of the so-called “cumulative and cocktail effect” of substances found in these surfaces. According to the organization, they may contain organophosphate plasticizers, flame retardants, resins, dyes and heavy metals, and exposure can occur through skin contact, inhalation of volatile compounds or the accidental ingestion of small particles. “In all probability, all these surfaces are harmful to health and should be avoided,” said José Antonio Sánchez Raba, a spokesperson for Ecologists in Action.

The campaign is calling for the precautionary principle to be applied immediately, rather than waiting for the deadlines set by European regulations. Ecologists in Action points out that a transitional period runs until 17 October 2031 for granular infill on certain sports surfaces and is calling for replacement work to begin sooner, prioritizing the most deteriorated surfaces and spaces with the highest intensity of use.

PARQUES CON SALUD WILL CARRY OUT MAPPING ACROSS SPAIN

The alternatives it proposes include grass, sand, soil, wood, stone and polished concrete, always under technical supervision to ensure accessibility and safety in the event of falls. The organization cites the Cantabrian municipality of Puente Viesgo as an example, where changes of this kind are already under way. It also warns that rubber retains heat during hot weather, while natural surfaces combined with trees can help create climate shelters.

On 17 October, Parques con Salud will launch a citizen mapping project to locate parks, schoolyards and sports facilities with this type of surface.
