The celebration of the saints’ calendar offers an opportunity to learn about the history of men and women who devoted their lives to religion, helping others and defending their beliefs. Among them is Saint Moses, a figure especially known for his conversion, his life of penance and his later role as a spiritual guide for other Christians.
SAINT MOSES
Saint Moses, traditionally known as Moses the Ethiopian or Moses the Black, lived during the early centuries of Christianity and is considered one of the so-called Desert Fathers. According to tradition, during his youth he led a life marked by violence and sin, but later experienced a profound conversion that led him to abandon that existence and seek a life devoted to prayer and penance.
After his conversion, Saint Moses withdrew to the Scetis Desert in Egypt, where he joined a community of monks. His transformation was so profound that he became an example for other religious figures, standing out for his humility, his ability to forgive and his constant effort to overcome the difficulties of his past. In time, he was ordained a priest and took on responsibilities within the Christian community.
Tradition places his death around the year 405, when he was killed alongside other monks during an attack on the community. Saint Moses is venerated as a martyr and as an example of conversion, since his story represents the possibility of changing one’s life through faith, penance and spiritual commitment. His memory remains especially strong within the Eastern Christian tradition and among those who follow the legacy of the Desert Fathers.
WHY ARE SAINTS’ FEAST DAYS CELEBRATED?
The celebration of saints’ feast days has become part of our culture through the Christian tradition established in Spain. But what does it really mean to celebrate a saint’s day? Catholicism has designated each day of the year to remember, or commemorate, important Christians who also suffered persecution at the hands of those who rejected the Catholic faith.
The Roman Martyrology lists the names in the calendar of saints as we know it. The name refers to a kind of encyclopedia that the Vatican updates by adding new saints after their canonization.
