Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the bite of a mosquito found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. The dengue virus causes high fever, muscle and joint pain, rashes and, in some cases, hemorrhagic complications. There are four serotypes of the virus, meaning a person can become infected more than once.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the bite of an infected mosquito, not through direct contact between people. There is currently no specific treatment that cures dengue, although mild cases are managed with rest, hydration and medication to reduce fever and pain.
