The most striking case is Valpalmas, in Zaragoza, with 123 residents and no children under 10. Nearby is Paracuellos de la Ribera, also in Zaragoza, with 111 residents and no children in that age group. They are the two most populated municipalities in Aragon where children under 10 have completely disappeared from the census.
The list continues with Piedratajada, which has 97 residents; Rillo, in Teruel, with 94; and Barbuñales, in Huesca, with 93. None has a single child under 10. Other examples include Alarba, with 91 residents, Laperdiguera and Gargallo, both with 87, and Murero, with 85 residents and no children in that age group.
TERUEL AND ZARAGOZA ACCOUNT FOR MOST CASES
The province of Teruel has the most municipalities without children under 10, with 41 cases, while Zaragoza is close behind, with 40. Together, they account for 81 of the 87 Aragonese municipalities in this situation. Huesca, by contrast, has just six towns without a single resident who is still under 10.
In Teruel, the list includes Rillo, Gargallo, Calomarde, Singra, Torre de Arcas, Blesa, Ababuj, Cosa, Tramacastiel, Alobras and Cascante del Río. In all of them, the 0-to-9 age group is completely empty, although some still have several dozen residents in older age groups.
Zaragoza presents a very similar picture. In addition to Valpalmas and Paracuellos de la Ribera, the list includes Piedratajada, Alarba, Murero, Ardisa, Clarés de Ribota, Malanquilla, Torrehermosa, Calcena, Aladrén and Nigüella. The absence of children under 10 is therefore not limited to towns with barely 20 residents.
60 MUNICIPALITIES ALSO HAVE NO CHILDREN UNDER 15
In Huesca, Barbuñales is the most populated municipality without children under 10, with 93 residents. It is followed by Laperdiguera, with 87; Baldellou, with 81; Borau, with 77; Yésero, with 60; and Fago, with 23. There are just six such cases, far fewer than in the provinces of Zaragoza and Teruel.
The picture becomes even more striking when the age limit is extended. Sixty Aragonese municipalities have no residents under 15. Zaragoza accounts for 34 of them and Teruel for another 25. In Huesca, only Fago appears on the list: all 23 of its residents are at least 15 years old, leaving the census's three youngest age groups completely empty.
Among the most populated municipalities without children under 15, Valpalmas, with 123 residents, and Paracuellos de la Ribera, with 111, again stand out. They are followed by Calomarde and Singra, both with 76, and Blesa and Ardisa, with 74 residents. These towns currently have no residents from birth through age 14.
