This little hero is named Lucas and, more than a year after the incident, his extraordinary behavior has been recognized in Madrid. The Yorkshire has received an award from the Official College of Veterinarians of Madrid (Colvema) at the 10th edition of its Animal Welfare Awards.
LUCAS, A HERO WEIGHING JUST TWO KILOS
Although he weighs barely two kilos, Lucas showed that he has a huge heart. When his owner fell down an embankment, the small Yorkshire did not leave him: he went out to seek help. His actions have now earned him the Animal Committed to Society award, recognizing an extraordinary story that took place on a rural road in Bulbuente, Zaragoza.
In the middle of the night, Lucas managed to attract the attention of a Civil Guard patrol with his barking. The dog led the officers to the exact location where Rafael, his owner, was, making his rescue and subsequent medical care possible.
OTHER AWARD WINNERS
In addition to Lucas, the Animal Welfare Awards will recognize other notable recipients. Among them is Julia Navarro, a prominent journalist and writer who has made her bond with animals an important part of both her personal life and literary work.
In her book ‘Cuando ellos se van’, she pays tribute to the dogs that have accompanied her over the years and, especially, to Argos, her German shepherd. His loss prompted a reflection on the bond that develops between animals and people.
Meanwhile, in the Project Committed to Animal Welfare category, Colvema will recognize Aszal, an organization dedicated to the conservation, improvement and promotion of the Zamorano-Leonese donkey breed.
