“100% public” management and funding for the future hospital is one of the residents’ main demands, as they say “no to turning our health into a business”. They are also calling for a “comprehensive” emergency department with specialties including Traumatology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Cardiology and Ophthalmology, among others. “With the same services as the rest of Zaragoza’s hospitals,” they state. Along these lines, they are demanding a broad range of specialties, “with no cuts or forced transfers”.
The neighborhoods are also demanding “real” accessibility, including free parking for residents arriving from different towns in the province and “efficient” public transport from all neighborhoods in the district.
POSSIBLE USE OF THE CURRENT ROYO VILLANOVA
Once the move to the new hospital has taken place, residents believe the old facilities should be converted, following renovation work, into a public nursing home for the entire city, a public short- and long-term care hospital —including geriatrics, neurorehabilitation, palliative care and hemodialysis— and a mixed public center for mental health and geriatric conditions. In their view, these are “highly necessary” public services.
