The opening marks the completion of the renovation of the former Children’s Residence, a historic building that has housed different uses for decades and will now be dedicated to healthcare education. The project involved an investment of more than 7.3 million euros, in addition to the cost of teaching and clinical equipment.
During the inauguration, the president of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, said that the opening of the building met a “historic demand” from Huesca and the entire province. “It is a demand that has lasted more than 50 years and that, ultimately, the Government of Aragon has turned into reality,” he said.
A NEW ERA FOR MEDICINE IN HUESCA
The rector of the University of Zaragoza, Rosa Bolea, welcomed the restoration of part of this historic building thanks to collaboration between institutions and the university community. The new facility, she stressed, will strengthen public education, train future healthcare professionals and help talent remain in Huesca.
For his part, the president of the Provincial Council of Huesca, Isaac Claver, said that “Medicine now has a new home in Huesca” and described the facilities as a space from which to build the future of healthcare in Alto Aragon. The institution hopes that young people will be able to pursue both their education and their future professional careers in the province.
Claver also highlighted that the project went from administrative processing and tendering to becoming a reality in just three years. “These classrooms are beginning to fill today with future doctors,” he said, adding that the next challenge would be to ensure that many of the students trained in Huesca decide to stay, work and build their lives there.
MORE THAN 7.3 MILLION EUROS AND CLINICAL SIMULATION SPACES
The renovation involved an investment of more than 7.3 million euros, excluding equipment. The building has more than 4,100 square metres spread across three floors and an attic area, six classrooms with capacity for 60 students, another for 80, four seminar rooms and five laboratories.
The facilities also include areas for teaching staff, tutorials and research. One of their main attractions is the simulation spaces, which recreate an operating theatre, an intensive care unit, an emergency room and specialised Ophthalmology and Obstetrics consultation rooms.
The new Faculty also has two clinical skills classrooms where students can practise procedures and face situations similar to those they will encounter in their professional careers. With these resources, Huesca is taking a major step forward in university healthcare education and opening a new chapter for the Medical Degree in Alto Aragon.
