Rising housing costs and associated expenses are forcing many vulnerable families to prioritize paying for their homes over other essential needs. Rent, electricity, water and gas bills, as well as the purchase of basic equipment, are therefore absorbing an increasingly large share of the resources Caritas provides directly to the people it supports.
Last year, its Reception and Support program assisted 11,775 people, and the organization allocated more than three million euros in direct aid for housing and other basic expenses such as food, clothing, healthcare and education.
NEARLY 300,000 PEOPLE IN ARAGÓN FACE SOCIAL EXCLUSION
The housing situation is also part of a broader scenario of vulnerability affecting a significant share of the region. According to data collected by the organization from the latest Report on Social Exclusion and Development in Aragón, around 300,000 people, or 22.9% of Aragón’s population, are experiencing social exclusion.
In 2025, Caritas Aragón allocated a total of 17.4 million euros, 2.31% more than the previous year, to its various programs, resources and projects. Through them, it supported 18,398 people affected by problems such as insufficient income, unemployment or a lack of housing.
These difficulties are compounded by the irregular administrative status of many people who turn to Caritas. Nearly half of those assisted during the past year were in an irregular administrative situation, a circumstance that further complicates access to employment, housing and certain social benefits.
