The data from the European Union's Oil Bulletin, reported at the time by Servimedia, reflected a significant increase compared with the previous year. Gasoline was 23.6% more expensive than 12 months earlier, while diesel had risen by 25.3%. In addition, a barrel of Brent had reached $80, leading to warnings that fuel prices could continue to rise in the following weeks.
Specifically, the average price of gasoline stood at 1.437 euros per liter, while diesel reached 1.291 euros. The latter had increased by 0.86% from the previous reference, when it stood at 1.278 euros per liter.
Those prices were also felt at the gas station. Filling a 55-liter gasoline tank cost 79.04 euros. For a diesel vehicle, the cost was 71.01 euros, 61 cents more than in the previous reference.
Despite the increases, Spain maintained average prices below those of the European Union and the eurozone. In the EU-27, gasoline reached 1.56 euros per liter and diesel 1.403 euros, while in the eurozone they stood at 1.613 and 1.423 euros, respectively.
The rising cost of diesel and a bill of more than 70 euros to fill a tank thus marked the evolution of fuel prices at the time. This is how Aragón Digital reported it five years ago, in the original article about diesel and gasoline prices in Spain.
