The situation is particularly striking in Reading, where only 2.8% of students are at these higher levels. In Mathematics, the figure reaches 4.9%, while in Science it stands at 4.4%. In other words, barely three out of every 100 students in Aragon reach the highest levels of reading proficiency.
FEWER AND FEWER STUDENTS AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS
The trend in recent years also points to a decline. In 2022, the percentage of students in Aragon at levels 5 and 6 was 7.6% in Mathematics, 6.5% in Reading and 6.9% in Science. Three years later, all three indicators had fallen to 4.9%, 2.8% and 4.4%, respectively.
The comparison with 2015 highlights the gap even further. A decade ago, 9.3% of students in Aragon reached the highest levels in Mathematics, while 7.5% did so in Reading. Today, those percentages have been cut nearly in half in Mathematics and to well below half in reading proficiency. In Science, the figure has fallen from 6.6% to 4.4%.
Despite the decline, in 2025 Aragon maintains a slightly higher proportion of high-performing students than the Spanish average: Spain records 3.4% in Mathematics, 2.3% in Reading and 4.3% in Science. However, the region remains below the OECD, where levels 5 and 6 account for 7.6% of students in Mathematics, 5.5% in Reading and 7.2% in Science.
The data are part of a PISA edition in which Aragon has also experienced a significant drop in its average scores. Between 2022 and 2025, the region lost 24.8 points in Mathematics, 26.9 in Reading and 17.5 in Science, a decline that has accompanied the reduction in the number of students reaching the highest performance levels.
