The president of Aragón, Jorge Azcón, has described the budget increase as one of the regional government’s main priorities for next year. During a visit to IES Vega del Turia in Teruel, he said the education budget was in its final stages and that the increase could become the “largest budget rise” in the department’s history.
A substantial part of the effort will go toward teachers. Teaching staff salaries will rise by approximately 7.75% in 2027, combining a general increase of 5.5% with an additional 2.25%. The government’s aim is to significantly improve the pay conditions of teachers in Aragón.
“For many, many years, teachers in Aragón have been the worst paid in Spain,” Azcón said, arguing that the planned increase would reverse that situation: “It is impossible for teachers to feel valued, and for our teaching staff to feel respected, if they do not receive appropriate pay.” He explained that next year teachers in Aragón would no longer occupy that position, while the Education Department would surpass 20,000 payrolls.
The budget increase will therefore be accompanied by an expansion of staff numbers. The government expects there to be “more teachers than ever”, despite there being fewer students, and for teachers to have a lighter teaching workload so they can devote more time to educational support.
INFRASTRUCTURE, CLIMATE ADAPTATION AND UNIVERSITY
The 2027 budget will also set aside a significant allocation for educational infrastructure, one of the areas in which the government acknowledges that a substantial amount of work remains pending. Priorities will include adapting classrooms to changing climate conditions, with increased investment to address periods of extreme heat and improve conditions in schools.
Funding for the University of Zaragoza will be another key pillar of the budget. The government hopes to reach an agreement shortly, extending through 2030, that will give the institution greater financial stability and facilitate medium-term planning.
Resources for science and research will also increase, as the government seeks to strengthen both areas within its education policy. Azcón summed up the aim of the budget increase as a change of scale for the system, intended to mark “a before and after” for education in Aragón.
