This Aragon municipality has the lowest income: barely over 11,300 euros per resident

Nearly one in ten municipalities in Aragon falls within Spain’s lowest income bracket, with average annual income of up to 13,407 euros per person. Another 27.5% is classified as lower-middle income, meaning 38.2% of Aragon’s municipalities are in the two lowest tiers, according to 2024 data from the INE’s Household Income Distribution Atlas.
This Aragon municipality has the lowest income: barely over 11,300 euros per resident

Within this group, one municipality records the lowest figure among Aragonese municipalities with more than 2,000 residents. Its average net income stands at 11,372 euros per person per year, or around 948 euros a month if spread over twelve monthly payments, placing it last in the regional ranking for this population size.

It is Maella, in the province of Zaragoza. The municipality has an average net income of 11,372 euros per resident, although this is an improvement on the previous year, when the figure stood at 10,890 euros. In just one year, the indicator rose by 482 euros per person, according to data from the INE’s Household Income Distribution Atlas.

Maella is followed by two other municipalities in Zaragoza province. Caspe records average net income of 12,176 euros per person, while Ricla reaches 12,436 euros. Just ten euros higher is Illueca, at 12,446 euros, confirming the strong presence of Zaragoza municipalities among Aragon’s lowest-income areas.

ZARAGOZA ACCOUNTS FOR NINE OF THE TEN LOWEST-INCOME MUNICIPALITIES

The presence of Zaragoza municipalities continues as the ranking progresses. Épila records 12,931 euros per person, while La Almunia de Doña Godina reaches 13,352 euros. They join Maella, Caspe, Ricla and Illueca among the municipalities with more than 2,000 residents that have the lowest average net incomes in Aragon.

Calatorao also appears, with 13,427 euros; Cariñena, with 13,717; and Mallén, with 13,806 euros per person. In total, nine of the ten lowest-income municipalities in the group analyzed are located in Zaragoza province, a concentration that makes this territory the main feature of the lower end of the ranking.

CALANDA IS THE ONLY MUNICIPALITY IN TERUEL AMONG THE TEN LOWEST-INCOME AREAS

The only exception among these ten municipalities is Calanda, in the province of Teruel, whose average net income stands at 13,428 euros per person per year. The figure is practically identical to that of Calatorao, which records 13,427 euros, leaving just one euro between the two municipalities in the 2024 ranking.

Huesca province, meanwhile, has no municipality among the ten lowest-income areas in this group. Municipalities in Huesca with more than 2,000 residents report higher figures than those recorded by Maella, Caspe, Ricla or Illueca, according to the provincial tables in the Household Income Distribution Atlas.

INCOME RISES DESPITE REMAINING AMONG THE LOWEST

Being near the bottom of the ranking does not necessarily mean that income fell over the past year. Caspe rose from 11,616 euros per person in 2023 to 12,176 in 2024, while Ricla increased from 11,749 to 12,436 euros. Maella also improved by 482 euros, although it continues to record the lowest figure among the municipalities analyzed.

The trend is also positive in other municipalities. Illueca rose from 12,083 to 12,446 euros per person, while Épila increased from 12,570 to 12,931 euros. These increases improved average income compared with the previous year, although the municipalities remain at the bottom of Aragon’s ranking.

The INE indicator refers to average net income per person and is not equivalent to average salary. It includes different household income sources, such as wages, pensions and benefits. Only Aragonese municipalities with more than 2,000 residents were considered for this ranking.
