This morning, the Aragon Government Delegation hosted a meeting of the Regional Winter Road Maintenance Committee to review and update coordination and response protocols for snowfall and other extreme weather situations that could affect state roads over the coming months.
COORDINATION FOR SNOWFALL AND EXTREME WEATHER SITUATIONS
Those taking part in the meeting included the Spanish government's subdelegate in Zaragoza, Noelia Herrero; the subdelegate in Huesca, Carlos Campo; and the subdelegate in Teruel, Enrique Gómez; road maintenance officials from the State Roads Division in Aragon; commanders from the Civil Guard, the National Police and the Military Emergency Unit; and representatives from Aemet, the Directorate-General for Traffic, Civil Protection, and the Interior, Emergencies and Roads departments of the Aragon Government. In short, all the institutions and bodies involved in responding to incidents and disruptions that weather conditions may cause during the winter.
Winter road maintenance operations include preventive work during periods of low temperatures, mainly to prevent the formation of ice on the road surface, as well as imposing restrictions on heavy vehicles before they can become stranded on the roads.
As part of this plan, users are advised to follow the recommendations issued at all times by the responsible authorities in the event of adverse weather and to stay informed about road conditions through official channels. In this regard, it is important to remember that one of the amendments to the General Traffic Regulations that came into force on October 1 concerns snowy conditions: “On motorways and dual carriageways, overtaking will be prohibited when traffic is hindered, and the left lane must be kept clear for emergency vehicles and snowplows.”
THE OPERATION WILL HAVE 148 SNOWPLOWS AND 42 BRINE DEPOTS
For the 2026-2027 winter road maintenance campaign, Aragon will have 148 snowplows, 70 of them in Zaragoza province, 39 in Huesca and another 39 in Teruel. In addition, there will be 29 storage facilities and 76 de-icing material silos, with a capacity of 8,700 tonnes in Zaragoza, 5,120 in Huesca and 8,250 in Teruel, as well as 42 brine depots capable of storing 493,000 liters in Zaragoza, 483,000 in Huesca and 344,000 in Teruel. Last year's campaign passed without any notable incidents, and more than 4,000 tonnes of de-icing materials and 6.6 million liters of brine were used.
