Real Zaragoza

Ibai Gómez: “We are no longer the team to beat because of our crest, but because of what we are showing”

After five consecutive wins, Real Zaragoza have climbed to the top of the standings. They need to keep winning to remain among the leaders after matchday 38. The Blanquillos are now the most in-form team. “We are no longer the team to beat because of our crest, but because of what we are showing,” said coach Ibai Gómez.

This also means that Real Zaragoza have “slight doubts” when planning their matches. “We are earning respect; we are the team to beat not only because of our crest and history, but because of what we are showing. We have that concern that they might alter their approach because of what we are,” he explained.

“We expect a match in which they will come looking for us and try to win individual battles; it will be a long game. Atlético Madrileño do many things well, but they can be hurt because they are better going forward than at the back. We are going to have to be very good,” he said about Real Zaragoza’s approach.

“It is a difficult, attractive match against a good team. We must not forget that reserve sides are projects close to taking the step up, in this case to a Champions League team. They have high-level, young players with plenty of energy, a great coach and a highly competitive side,” Ibai Gómez said of Real Zaragoza’s next opponents.

After going three consecutive matches without a win, the coach believes they become even more dangerous. Their “competitive mentality” makes them better and “because of the club’s nature, it could be more difficult if they have not won.”

THE VALUE OF BEING AT THE TOP

For Ibai, being at the top and enjoying the journey has “incalculable value.” “We put up a picture in the gym of something close to what we want to be, celebrating with the fans, with looks of excitement and happiness,” the Real Zaragoza coach explained.

He also said that he receives “many messages from people thanking us for restoring the excitement to a fan base that deserves it.” They feel that the supporters “are enjoying themselves and becoming excited.” “We have achieved nothing yet, but we are clear about the path,” he added.

The coach wants to enjoy every day. He considers this “key.” In addition, Real Zaragoza’s players “compete like animals.” What leads to success, Ibai says, is “enjoying the process.”

THE OPPONENTS’ FEAR

For opponents, hosting Real Zaragoza is one of the most attractive fixtures. The Blanquillos’ visit fills stadiums. That also pleases the Blanquillos’ coach.

“You can see that opponents enjoy facing Real Zaragoza. The more atmosphere there is, the closer it gets to real football, which is what we like. The fans make this exist; I am happy that they support us and that there are great atmospheres,” Ibai concluded.
