Pueyo urges government to intervene in the housing market “once and for all”

Chunta Aragonesista on Monday called for greater public intervention in the housing market and demanded measures to facilitate access to housing both nationally and in Aragón. Its president, Jorge Pueyo, made the call during a meeting of the party’s National Committee held at its headquarters in Zaragoza.

Pueyo began by expressing his solidarity with Maricarmen, whose situation he used as an example of a problem that, in his view, affects broad sectors of the population. “The housing market needs intervention. The Spanish Government has a historic responsibility,” he said, urging it to approve “once and for all” the decree containing ambitious housing measures.

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STATE, BUT ALSO OF THE AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES

The CHA president also called for specific measures for Aragón and, in particular, rural areas. He recalled that a year ago the party proposed a housing plan in Congress that included 75 million euros for the region.

He also pointed out that responsibility for housing lies with the autonomous communities and local councils as well, and called on the Government of Aragón to allow areas under housing market pressure to be declared. He cited Navarra and Catalonia as examples of territories where this regulation has been applied and worked.

Pueyo further warned that the housing problem does not affect only young people, although he highlighted their difficulties in becoming independent. In this regard, he said young people currently spend “91% of their salary” on rent or mortgages and that “one in three young people cannot move out before the age of 30”. He therefore argued that housing must be guaranteed as a right and must not become an object of speculation.

Finally, Jorge Pueyo announced that Chunta is working on new proposals to present to the regional parliament and that the party is considering creating a specialized group made up of party members from different parts of the territory to compile specific measures. “Housing is not a market commodity. It must be subject to intervention,” he concluded.
