Before the National Executive Committee meeting of the People’s Party, held this Monday in Génova, the leader of the party in Aragón spoke to the media. Asked whether the anger also targeted the autonomous communities, which have powers over housing, he said that “what is happening is that this government has been in power for eight years and has been unable to solve this problem.”
THE ARAGÓN GOVERNMENT’S HOUSING ACTION
In this regard, the president of Aragón defended the work of his administration, stating that it has promoted 3,600 homes, including those already delivered, under construction and planned, while “after eight years of a Socialist government with Podemos, the figures do not lie: it built 86 homes in eight years.” He also pointed out that this is a problem affecting the whole of Spain and that this discontent among Spaniards did not exist when Pedro Sánchez’s current government came to power.
Azcón also referred to the housing decree that the Council of Ministers plans to approve this Tuesday, which is causing clashes between its two coalition partners, the PSOE and Sumar. “If they cannot reach an agreement in the Council of Ministers and are unable to approve measures that, in my opinion, are misguided, the logical thing would be for them to get up and go home,” he said.
In this regard, he criticized the attitude of Sumar ministers Yolanda Díaz, Ernest Urtasun, Mónica García, Pablo Bustinduy and Sira Rego: “What are they going to defend? They will continue protesting against themselves, but they will also continue clinging to their seats on the Council of Ministers. It is all completely nonsensical.”
Regarding the possibility that the decree could require the autonomous communities to cover the rental costs of vulnerable tenants unable to pay, Azcón criticized the state for failing to get involved in construction, even though Pedro Sánchez “has been heard promising hundreds of thousands of homes.” He also denounced the fact that, under joint plans in this area, the autonomous communities contribute “the largest share of the budget.”
