IU rejects decision not to field Frente Amplio in Teruel: CHA says it had the right to decide

Izquierda Unida Aragón general coordinator Marta Abengochea considers it “absurd that one of the most depopulated and neglected areas of Aragón should be left without a left-wing alternative to defend its working class and demand public policies for its towns and counties”.

“We cannot run only where we believe we are guaranteed representation. Political responsibility means also being present where it is more difficult,” Abengochea said, disagreeing with the decision not to stand in Teruel.

In response to the statement, CHA general secretary Verónica Villagrasa clarified that the agreement between the different parties stipulated that this decision fell to Chunta and that it had been communicated to the members before the choice was made.

“We are in a situation we have never faced before, in which stopping the far right has become a political obligation,” Villagrasa said. She ruled out Frente Amplio standing in Teruel without Chunta candidates and dismissed the possibility of left-wing voters becoming demobilized because “they know that the very aim of our participation in these elections is to stop the far right”.
