Roberts Blumbergs bursts onto the ACB scene with Casademont Zaragoza: double-double and game MVP

After joining Casademont Zaragoza this summer amid the club's major overhaul, Roberts Blumbergs already has his first great ACB memory. The Latvian power forward made his debut in Spain's top flight with an impactful performance in Casademont's buzzer-beating win over La Laguna Tenerife. In his first game in the competition, the red-and-black interior player, who was the highest-rated player of the game, recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds and a performance rating of 21.

And the Latvian stepped up at different moments and in different ways to become one of the main standouts for Gonzalo García de Vitoria's team. The red-and-black '3' showed his ability to score both from outside and close to the rim, with three-pointers, plays in the paint and even a dunk reflecting the variety of offensive resources he can offer. Blumbergs finished with two three-pointers from six attempts and also made all of his free throws.

In addition, the Latvian played a key role in the final play of the game, although his contribution does not appear in his offensive statistics. Blumbergs blocked Tenerife player Ethan Happ inside the red-and-black team's paint in the play before the decisive basket, secured the rebound and put the ball in Guillem Vives' hands. Vives quickly found Justin Jaworski, who scored virtually on the buzzer to give Casademont its first win of the season.

On the other hand, his offensive production was accompanied by a significant contribution on the boards. Blumbergs finished with 10 rebounds, seven defensive and three offensive, making him Casademont's leading offensive rebounder. He also added two blocks, leaving his mark on the defensive end and completing an all-around performance in a debut that ended with the best possible outcome thanks to Jaworski's buzzer-beating basket.

A PROFILE CASADEMONT NEEDED

Beyond the numbers from his debut, Blumbergs' performance showed on the court one of the reasons Casademont opted to sign him. The Aragonese team had long needed a power forward capable of pulling his defender out of the paint and forcing him to operate away from the rim, while adding outside shooting, height and a different threat to its interior game.

In Tenerife, the Latvian displayed precisely that versatility. His six attempts from beyond the arc forced the opposing defense to keep track of a player who can also do damage near the rim. That ability to combine outside shooting with his physical tools and presence on the boards makes Blumbergs a player who can open up space for his teammates and provide different offensive solutions within the red-and-black team's system.

"You always want to give your best and show what you are capable of, wherever you go. That's why I think this is a great challenge for me," he said during his presentation as a Casademont player. His ACB debut has already provided evidence of an important part of what the Latvian wanted to prove.
