Europa become first club in Real Zaragoza's Primera RFEF group to sack coach

After four rounds, Group 2 of Primera RFEF, featuring Real Zaragoza, Huesca and Teruel, has its first coaching casualty. C.E. Europa announced on Monday the dismissal of Josep María Gené after the Barcelona-based club collected just one point from its opening four matches.

The decision comes after Europa were beaten 2-1 by Real Murcia in the latest round, in a match in which the Murcia side turned the scoreline around in the final moments with goals in the 90th and 100th minutes. Previously, the Barcelona-based team lost their opener to Real Jaén (0-3), drew 0-0 at Alcorcón on matchday two and were beaten 1-2 by Hércules on the third matchday.

Those results have left a team that reached the Segunda División promotion playoffs last year with just one point from a possible 12. Europa are therefore at the bottom end of the table alongside the other three teams to have collected only one draw in this opening stage of Primera RFEF: Algeciras, Juventud de Torremolinos and Teruel, the only team in the entire division yet to celebrate a goal.

"Although little time has passed since the start of the championship, the club believes this is the right time to take this step. The aim is to act responsibly and in a timely manner, understanding that the situation is fully reversible and that the team has the room and ambition to aspire to more," said the Catalan club in its statement announcing Gené's departure. Europa will announce in the coming hours who will take charge of the team.
