Pilar Festivities 2026 to Bring Back Independence Boulevard Atmosphere, With Changes to the Opening Proclamation

Zaragoza is counting down to nine days of concerts, children's activities, dance, tradition, fairs and gatherings, with almost 1,000 events spread across the city. The program, presented this Wednesday at a packed Auditorium, includes several major new features.

These include more activity along Independence Boulevard, an artistic and emotional boost for the Virgen del Pilar procession with different performances, new venues such as Salamero Square and changes to the logistics of the opening proclamation. "Many, many months of work have gone into creating a program that enables us to surpass ourselves year after year and make the festivities unforgettable. I ask you to continue showcasing the hospitality that characterizes us so that they become an unforgettable memory for everyone, including all those who visit us," Mayor Natalia Chueca explained.

LIFE RETURNS TO INDEPENDENCE BOULEVARD

"One of the things most missed in previous years was the festive atmosphere on Independence Boulevard, and we have brought it back this year," the mayor acknowledged. Paseo Escena will thus fill the city center with a variety of shows, many of them itinerant.

One example is "L'oisoh et le chamoh," by the Paris Bénarès company, in which two gigantic animals will travel along the boulevard. It will also once again host the FAM Battle, an urban dance event for young audiences, in collaboration with Red Bull.

THE VIRGIN'S PROCESSION TAKES CENTER STAGE

Another major focus will be the renewal of the La Subida de la Virgen del Pilar ceremony, which will gain artistic and emotional depth through the participation of soprano Eugenia Boix, accompanied by the Capilla del Pilar, the Infantes del Pilar and organist Luis Antonio González. This will reinforce the symbolic and solemn nature of one of the most eagerly awaited moments on the eve of the Flower Offering. Since it was included in the festive program in 2024, the event has continued to grow, attracting 15,000 spectators to Plaza del Pilar in 2025.

NEW CRAFT MARKET

Aragón Square will host the new craft market, which will complement the traditional Aragonese Craft and Agri-Food Fair in Plaza de los Sitios and help invigorate one of the city center's most emblematic areas during the festivities.

Speaking of new venues, the musical program will feature the Raíz stage in Salamero Square, dedicated to traditional and folk-inspired music. Artists and groups from Spain and abroad, including Biella Nuei, Ester Vallejo, Fulu Miziki, Lorena Álvarez and Entreveradas, will perform there, reinforcing the city's commitment to roots music and initiatives linked to cultural heritage.

MORE FIREWORKS

The Pilar Festivities will also expand their fireworks program with a fourth display, joining those scheduled after the opening proclamation, at Pignatelli Park and at the closing of the festivities in the area around the Ebro. The new location will be San Francisco Square, bringing this event to other parts of Zaragoza.

NEW VENUE AT THE CENTRO DE HISTORIAS

The performing arts will have a greater presence at this year's Pilar Festivities with the addition of another venue, bringing the total to three main stages. As a new feature, the courtyard of the Centro de Historias will once again host dance programming, with the "Historias en Danza" series, alongside the Xior Residence Amphitheater with "Humor en Xior" and Delicias Park with "Delicias de Circo." The program will offer specialized productions and bring together leading national and international figures.

At the Centro de Historias, dance will take center stage with performances such as "Grietas," by Alba de Miguel; "Liebe," by Titoyaya Dansa; and "Retorcido · Vente conmigo niña," by Zaragoza-based company LaMov.

CHANGES TO THE OPENING PROCLAMATION AND A "SPORTING" PARADE

The 2026 festivities will be marked by an especially significant event for the city: Zaragoza's designation as European Capital of Sport 2027. This will inspire the opening proclamation under the slogan "Zaragoza Campeona." It will be a parade drawing on Olympic ceremonies, honoring major figures in Zaragoza sport and the city's clubs, while also incorporating humor and street theater with the participation of the local cultural community.

As is tradition, the parade will end in Plaza del Pilar, where, before the opening proclamation by professionals from Zaragoza City Council's Fire, Rescue and Civil Protection Service, an event full of surprises will take place. A few minutes before 9:00 p.m., Zaragoza artist Mar Giménez will perform "El olor de Zaragoza."

THE CROWDS ARE EXPECTED AT THE FLOWER OFFERING, WITH CHANGES TO ACCESS ROUTES

Traditional events will once again be at the heart of the festivities, with the Flower Offering on October 12 expected to bring together hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors. Almochuel City Council will open the Offering at 6:30 a.m., which will bring together 99,980 people in 994 groups, in addition to individual participants. The latter will enter Plaza del Pilar via a new route running along San Jorge, San Vicente de Paúl and Arcedianos streets. This access route will remain open from 6:45 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

To avoid long waits, organizers recommend avoiding the period between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., which coincides with the highest influx of participants and institutional events. People wishing to take part in the Offering with their pets are advised to do so preferably between 6:45 and 9:00 a.m. or between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.

This year, the Virgin's upper mantle will be made with red carnations, so participants are especially encouraged to bring this type of flower during the early hours of the day to facilitate its assembly. As in previous years, the use of plastic, cellophane and other non-biodegradable materials in bouquets and baskets is prohibited.

The Aragonese capital will pay tribute this year to Venezuela, the guest country, whose floral flag will feature prominently on the mantle of the Virgin of the Pillar during the Offering.

The following day, the Fruit Offering will once again bring color to the city center's streets, showcasing local and foreign gastronomy and folklore. In 2025, it recorded its highest attendance, with 3,500 participants. This year, those wishing to take part can register through the city's website until September 27.

Jotas are an essential part of the Pilar Festivities, especially during the 140th anniversary of the Official Aragonese Jota Contest, which will take place on Sunday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. Its winners, together with those of the 40th Official Benjamin, Children's and Youth Contest, will showcase their talent to the public on the main day of the festivities at 5:00 p.m. on the Ambar Fuente de Goya Stage in Plaza del Pilar.
