New film event in Zaragoza: a premiere with an outdoor screening in this well-known square

"Forqué. The Craft of Making Cinema," the feature-length documentary directed by Gaizka Urresti and Rafael Maluenda that revisits the life and legacy of José María Forqué, will hold its premiere this Saturday, October 24, in the Aragonese capital with the support of Zaragoza City Council. The event will be closely linked to the filmmaker's memory, taking place outdoors in José María Forqué Square, in the heart of the El Gancho neighborhood—the same neighborhood where he was born 103 years ago.

The screening, which was scheduled for October 3 but had to be postponed due to weather conditions, will take place at the Xior open-air amphitheater at 8:00 p.m. and will be open to the public until capacity is reached. The choice of location is no coincidence. Thanks to the support and offer of Zaragoza City Council, the film will meet Zaragoza audiences in the square named after the filmmaker, just a few meters from the place where he was born, San Lamberto Square.

The premiere thus becomes not only a film screening but also a symbolic return of José María Forqué to the neighborhood he came from—a popular, open-air celebration for local residents and the entire city.

The format is particularly connected to the way Forqué understood cinema throughout his career: as a form of filmmaking designed to reach audiences, entertain them and move them. The documentary specifically highlights his role as a craftsman and professional in the industry, capable of moving across very different genres and making cinema both a vocation and a profession.

“We felt it was especially moving for the film to meet the people of Zaragoza precisely here, just a few meters from the place where he was born, in a popular and open screening. It is a beautiful way to bring Forqué back to his neighborhood and, above all, to do so through what he devoted his life to: cinema and audiences,” says Gaizka Urresti, the film's co-director and producer.

The project's connection with Zaragoza has also continued throughout its production, during which it received support from Zaragoza Film Office while filming in the city.

A KEY FILMMAKER WORTH REDISCOVERING

"Forqué. The Craft of Making Cinema" revisits the life and work of one of the great professionals of Spanish cinema. Although his surname remains very present thanks to the awards that bear his name, his figure and extensive filmography are less well known today than might be expected. The documentary recovers his legacy through his own voice and the testimonies of actors, filmmakers and professionals from the worlds of cinema and culture.

They include Enrique Cerezo, José Sacristán, Julia Gutiérrez Caba, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, Luisa Gavasa, Carlos Areces, Juanjo Puigcorbé, Nacho G. Velilla, Agustín Sánchez Vidal, Luis Alegre, Fernando Méndez-Leite, Jorge Asín, Antón Castro, Vicky Calavia, Ana Asión and Alberto Jiménez Schumacher.
