From Rock to Flamenco and Street Jazz: Northern Zaragoza Neighborhoods Fill with Music

Jazz is returning to northern Zaragoza, but it will not be alone. Rock and roll, flamenco, Balkan rhythms and puppetry will share the spotlight at the 32nd Jazz al Margen festival, which begins this Friday, October 23, bringing live music to civic centers, parks and city streets. The program includes 13 concerts, a listening session, a children’s show and a book presentation.

The event will bring together international artists such as Balkan Paradise Orchestra and young Aragonese talents including Saúl Andreu, along with bands exploring a wide range of styles. The festival will once again spread across Zaragoza’s northern neighborhoods and will also reach San Gregorio, Paracuellos de la Ribera and Embid de la Ribera.

The opening concert will be performed by Viki Lafuente's Big Band, which will take the stage on Friday, October 23, at the Estación del Norte Civic Center. The Aragonese group will revive great jazz classics associated with voices such as Ella Fitzgerald and Liza Minnelli, launching several weeks of performances.

FROM FLAMENCO TO ROCK AND ROLL

Saturday, October 24, will be the turn of Aurora Clara Flamenco, which will give a concert at 9 p.m. at the Estación del Norte Civic Center. The performance will pay tribute to Joaquín Merchán, a cultural officer for Zaragoza City Council and a flamenco enthusiast who died this year. Led by guitarist Raúl Mannola, the group combines jazz fusion, progressive rock, flamenco and world music.

On Sunday, October 25, the Tío Jorge Civic Center will host a double bill: Swingmania & Swingon at 1 p.m. and Zaragoza trumpeter Saúl Andreu at 7 p.m. The latter will present his musical project following the release of "Soulful Traveler," an album that has taken him to stages across Spain.

The festival will also visit Sala López on October 29 with Le Tour de Force, a band that blends jazz, progressive rock, Latin rhythms and metal. One day later, Latino Blanco Quintet will perform at the Estación del Norte Civic Center, while on October 31 music will take to the streets with Rumble Fish at Tío Jorge Park and Dixiewalking in San Gregorio.

BALKAN MUSIC, PUPPETRY AND A TRIBUTE TO THE FESTIVAL'S FOUNDER

One of the main attractions will arrive on November 6 with Balkan Paradise Orchestra, which will perform at 9 p.m. at the Río Ebro Civic Center, Fernández Ordóñez building. Its ten instrumentalists combine Balkan sounds with rhythms from different parts of the world in a show driven by the energy of wind and percussion instruments.

The program will continue with acts such as Arrabal Big Band, Hiber Trio and Malwina Masternak Quartet. There will also be room for younger audiences with "Varieté," by Periplo Marionetas, a show combining humor, improvisation and jazz music.

The festival will also remember its founder, Bob Destiny, with the presentation of the book "Bob Destiny, la increíble historia de un Showman," written by Pedro Zapater. The event will mark the 10th anniversary of his death and will be accompanied by a performance from Muñoz & Naval Jazz.

JAZZ AL MARGEN TICKET PRICES

Concerts held at civic centers will have a general admission price of 4 euros, with two exceptions: performances by Viki Lafuente's Big Band and Aurora Clara, whose tickets will cost 10 euros. All other concerts will be free.

Tickets for paid events can be purchased through entradas.ibercaja.es. Proceeds will go to charitable causes, including the delivery of Christmas Eve dinners to vulnerable families in El Rabal.

With this new edition, Jazz al Margen continues its commitment to bringing different musical styles closer to audiences and taking concerts outside the usual circuits, turning neighborhoods and everyday spaces into stages for enjoying live music.
